AFP Engage! User's Guide

Introduction

AFP Engage!, a part of Open Door Networks' service location architecture, is an application which works in concert with Internet applications such as your Web browser to enable them to access resources on AppleShare and compatible servers over TCP/IP and AppleTalk networks, using URLs. The URLs have a new format specific to AFP (Apple Filing Protocol).

AFP-based servers (AppleShare servers) can be accessed over both AppleTalk and TCP/IP. A good example of the use of AFP URLs and AFP Engage! on the Internet is found in Open Door's AppleShare IP registry service. AppleShare IP servers that are registered with Open Door's service appear in a table in Open Door's AppleShare IP Registry Web page. Each entry contains information about a specific server, including a link to that server. By simply clicking on the link in their Web browser, a user running AFP Engage! mounts the given AppleShare IP server on the desktop, allowing the user to browse it as though it were a local drive.

Another good example of the use of AFP URLs would be the publishing of information about an organization's internal AppleShare servers through a Web page. Not only could the Web page have a summary of what information was contained on each server and where the servers were located, but it could also contain clickable links which actually mounted the server if desired. Such URLs could also be sent around in email messages and again simply clicked on to access particular servers.
